Klusener shocked at Dolphins sacking

Lance Klusener, the former South Africa allrounder, has been sacked as Dolphins’ coach after his contract was not renewed. He told ESPNcricinfo he was given “no reason,” for his dismissal and thought the decision was “very strange.”Coaching duties for the remainder of the Sunfoil Series, which concludes South Africa’s domestic season, will be immediately handed to Yashin Ebrahim and Roger Telemachus as joint caretaker coaches.”I am obviously very disappointed and surprised with the board’s decision, considering the progress of the team in the last four years,” Klusener said in the official statement. “I am a proud son of the soil of KwaZulu-Natal and I have relished every moment of coaching the Sunfoil Dolphins”I have no doubt that the squad has the talent to win more trophies like the Ram Slam title we won in the 2013-14 season, and while I won’t be their coach they will all know that I will be backing them all the way.”When contacted on Saturday, Dolphins CEO Pete de Wet said rumours of Klusener’s sacking were “not true at all” but on Monday said that the decision had been “difficult”.”Lance has been a loyal servant of KZN cricket and the Sunfoil Dolphins and his passion and loyalty to the team is unquestionable,” de Wet said. “That has made the decision taken by the board all the more difficult”.”The board felt that the time was right to refresh the team dynamic to enable this talented group of players to reach the next level, and agreed that a new coach was an integral part of that process,”Klusener was appointed interim coach at the Dolphins in January 2012, when Graham Ford left the franchise to take over as Sri Lanka’s national coach before confirmed in the role later that year.Under his tenure, Dolphins won one trophy – the 2013-14 T20 competition – and have maintained good form in the shortest format. This season, they lost the final of the Ram Slam to Titans. They have not done as well in other competitions, finishing fifth in the one-day cup with four wins from 10 matches and lie fourth in the fourth in the Sunfoil Series, which is only at its halfway stage, but have only won one match.Klusener was considered very much part of South Africa’s coaching structures and was even roped in as a lower-order batting consultant for the national team ahead of the Boxing Day Test against England.

Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Khan has been ruled out of the upcoming tour of Bangladesh after sustaining a back injury, and he will be replaced in the ODI squad by Junaid Khan, who had already been selected for the Tests and T20Is.Sohail, 31, retired hurt with lower back pain after bowling four overs during a conditioning camp on Friday. He was initially treated by the team physiotherapist, but later sent for a medical scan. After an initial report, it was decided that he rest for at least two weeks.”After the uncertain fitness of Sohail, we have decided to add Junaid Khan to continue in the ODIs as well,” Haroon Rasheed, the PCB’s chief selector, told ESPNcricinfo. “We cant say how serious Sohail’s injury is at the moment but he is presently advised two weeks rest.”Sohail was recently called up for the 2015 World Cup, where he picked up 12 wickets including a five-for against India in the opening match in Adelaide. Before coming back into national contention, he had played the last of his five ODIs in Zimbabwe, in 2011.Junaid had missed the tournament with a knee and thigh injury, and has been out of the team since October. He, however, recovered well ahead of the Bangladesh series after undergoing a rigorous rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

'They thrashed us' – Mathews

Rayudu thrilled at seeing team through to victory

A maiden ODI ton was nice, but guiding India to victory in the second ODI was its own reward, Ambati Rayudu said. Rayudu was promoted to No. 3, and having come into the middle in the seventh over, he was still at the crease in the 45th, to hit the winning runs.
“I’m definitely happy that I got a hundred,” Rayudu said, “but for me personally, I don’t think three figures matters as such – it’s just about the team winning. When you play for India, whatever role that the team gives us, I’m just happy I can fulfil the role they have given me today. I think it’s all about performing your role, more than about landmarks of fifties and hundreds.”
Rayudu and Shikhar Dhawan made 122 for the second wicket to form the bedrock of India’s chase. The pair began cautiously before accelerating systematically through the innings.
“At the start we were just looking to get a partnership going after an early wicket, and we were picking and choosing our shots. It was not really planned as such, but we were motivated to see the team through. I was just trying to be safe and rotate the strike.”

Are Sri Lanka’s hearts really in this series? While most teams talk themselves up pre-series, hitting upbeat, media-friendly buzzwords like “confident”, “focused” and “refreshed”, Sri Lanka were throwing around “under-prepared” and “challenging” before they set out for India. The first two matches have not dispelled this idea. India have been polished and dynamic, finding fresh performers in the likes of Akshar Patel and Ambati Rayudu while key personnel take a break. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are visibly rusty and low on spirit. They have begun the series meekly with bat and ball, and the fight that has characterised so much of their cricket in 2014, has not yet been seen.Sri Lanka will know, however, that no matter how underdone they felt coming into this tour, or how depleted the side is, they are still engaged in an international series, and they will be judged on the strength of their performance. The excuses they began with – no matter how valid – will wear thinner with each loss.Perhaps that is why Angelo Mathews did not mince words as he reflected on the six-wicket defeat on Thursday. “I think we’re slowly getting better, but I’m disappointed and embarrassed by the fact that we were not competitive enough against the Indians,” he said. “They thrashed us in the first ODI and also here. It was a convincing performance by them. We need to get our game up in the next few games to win against them.”Mathews is so far leading the way on the improvement front. His 92 not out is Sri Lanka’s best individual performance of the series so far, and as has been typical of his innings this year, was perfectly in tune with the needs of the team. Mathews might have been tempted to pursue a maiden ODI ton with more abandon towards the back end of the innings, but chose a more measured approach instead, ensuring his team batted out the 50 overs. The 92 takes his 2014 run tally to 834 – the highest so far in 2014 – and his average of 64.46 is better than that of the next five highest run scorers this year. “It would have been better if I had got a 60 and we won the game,” Mathews said. “Unfortunately we ended up on the losing side. I’ve been pretty good with the bat in the past six-eight months, so I’m trying to continue that and be as consistent for as long as I can, and to try and contribute with either bat or ball for the team. Whoever gets a start with the bat needs to get going for the team.”Mathews admitted Sri Lanka had been lethargic in the field as India accelerated towards their target through the middle overs, but said he had explored all his options as the game began to slip away. “We tried all the bowlers and I couldn’t get any wickets. I kept changing bowlers to see if we could get any,” he said. Sri Lanka used all eight bowling options in the XI for the second match in a row, but so far, they have managed only nine wickets across two games.”We don’t have a few of our best bowlers here – Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal, Sachithra Senanayake. But it is a learning curve for the bowlers. This is a difficult place to bowl. It takes a lot out of them mentally and physically. Our bowlers are quite inexperienced.”But that’s not an excuse, because we are playing international level, so we have to try and do well when we have the opportunity.”

Sangakkara, Jayawardene prosper after Herath nine

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene added an unbeaten 98 runs to drive Sri Lanka into a strong position after Rangana Herath had taken a career-best nine wickets

Junaid Khan was taken to hospital after he was hit on the helmet grille by a Dhammika Prasad bouncer in the 91st over of Pakistan’s innings. He continued to bat and was unbeaten on 13, but needed medical assistance when he reached the dressing room and lost his balance, according to Pakistan team manager Moin Khan.
Updating on Junaid’s condition at the end of the day, Grant Flower informed: “There is no internal bleeding and he was back [from the hospital] in the afternoon. He had a slight concuss but he is going to be alright and there’s nothing serious. But his chances of playing the rest of the Test match will depend on how he will be feeling tomorrow morning and then we will decide if he is going to bowl or not.”

Twice, in this match, Pakistan’s perseverance had meant Sri Lanka were not allowed to run away too far ahead. The home side, sitting on a 1-0 lead, won the toss on a batting-friendly pitch, but were restricted to a slightly below-par 320 by Pakistan’s seamers. Rangana Herath then quaked the Pakistan batting line-up with a career-best nine-wicket haul – the best by a left-arm bowler, but the visitors, led by a counterattacking century from wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, still managed to post a slender first-innings lead.Sri Lanka’s third advance, though, was the one threatening to take the match, and the series, way beyond Pakistan’s reach. It came from familiar quarters: the Kumar Sangakkara-Mahela Jayawardene combine. The two, batting together for the last time in Tests, blunted the Pakistan spinners during a period where they were extracting help from the pitch and added an unbeaten 98 runs to drive Sri Lanka into a strong position. During the course of their stand, the two also went past Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge to become the second-most prolific duo in Tests. In the absence of Junaid Khan, who sat out the last two sessions after being hit on the helmet grille while batting, Pakistan’s three frontline bowlers toiled for 61 out of 63 overs and were only able to dislodge the Sri Lanka openers. As has been the trend in this Test match, the SSC pitch offered much more to the bowlers in the last session. Few stayed low, some turned and bounced, and a couple beat the inside edge of Sangakkara’s bat as he went for the drive, a rare sight in itself. But if one had to pick two batsmen for such conditions, Jayawardene and Sangakkara would be top choice for most. They tired out the bowlers with their immaculate defence but played the most exquisite drives the moment the bowlers erred. Sangakkara reached yet another half-century with a paddle to fine-leg boundary in the last over of the day while Jayawardene, unbeaten on 49, was on course to make it a memorable farewell. The calmness with which Sangakkara and Jayawardene played was in complete contrast with the frantic morning session during which the two teams traded blows. The pitch was firmer and there was not much for the bowlers but that did not have much effect on the approach of Herath, who went on to pick up all four Pakistan wickets to fall. That Pakistan managed a slender 12-run lead was down to Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan wicketkeeper, who has been prolific in each innings in this series – he has gone past 50 every time. Sarfraz reserved his best for the SSC, after Pakistan had slid to 140 for 5 on the second day and were in danger of losing the advantage of restricting Sri Lanka to 320.He became the first Pakistan wicketkeeper to hit a century – his first in Tests – since Kamran Akmal’s unbeaten 158 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in February 2009.Starting the day 76 short of Sri Lanka’s total, Sarfraz was the key for Pakistan if they were to get close. And the batsman’s busy approach meant he didn’t let the bowlers settle on one line. The sweep and the cut were his most profitable allies as he continued to collect runs at a brisk pace. As Sri Lanka waited for the new ball, Sarfraz calmly kept the scoreboard moving with neat manoeuvres, a powerful sweep from outside off to Angelo Mathews standing out among his early runs on the day. Before reaching his century, Sarfraz lost Abdur Rehman after a 40-run stand – the batsman edging Herath to Jayawardene at first slip – and Wahab Riaz, who scored 17. On 90, he twice swept seamer Chanaka Welegedara off consecutive balls, hitting a four and a six to reach his maiden hundred off only 109 balls. The loud shriek of excitement as he celebrated the landmark reverberated around the ground. He received a standing ovation from the Pakistan dressing room that was relieved to see a possible setback had been single-handedly averted. After adding three more runs though, Sarfraz was dismissed in typical Herath fashion: the flight drawing the batsman forward, then turning to take the outside edge. It was only the second dicey shot Sarfraz played off the spinner after staying in command throughout his innings. It was also Herath’s eighth wicket. The bowler picked up another one with a slider to become the first bowler since Muttiah Muralitharan, in 2002, to bag a nine-wicket haul. He already has 18 dismissals this series, and will have his eye on Murali’s record of 22 wickets in a two-match Test series.

Mumbai suffer second straight defeat

West Zone

Gujarat were better disciplined in both departments to complete a last-ball victory over Mumbai, who have lost both their matches and languish at the bottom. Dhruv Raval (61) and Venugopal Rao (58) ensured the target of 233 was never beyond reach. However, Dhawal Kulkarni snared two wickets in the 36th over, including Raval’s to restore balance. Mumbai used the opening to push Gujarat to 194 for 6 in the 43rd over before Rao took charge again to lead them to a final-ball finish. The Mumbai top-order could not click and it was left to the captain Suryakumar Yadav, who hit a 67-ball 57 – the only half-century of the innings – to offer some structure to the score. Medium-pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 35 off his 12 overs.Half-centuries from Ankit Bawne (64) and Rahul Tripathi (62) built a score that proved just enough as the Maharashtra bowlers combined to sink Saurashtra by four runs. The duo’s 106-run partnership masked a feeble contribution from the openers. But both batsmen fell in the 35th over but the ensuing wobble was controlled by a Nitin Naik’s brisk cameo (42) to take the total to 254. Seamer Balkrishna Jadeja began well, but his three wickets cost 71 runs. Saurashtra’s reply was built on middle-order contributions as well, with Akshay Darekar dismissing three of the top four. Aarpit Vasavada managed a 67-ball 68 as he and Chirag Jani (42) kept the chase alive with an 86-run stand for the sixth wicket. Bu the tail could not muster the same resolve as the last two batsmen were run-out to end the game.

Central Zone

Madhya Pradesh began their Vijay Hazare campaign in dramatic fashion, with a tie against Uttar Pradesh in a rain-shorted match in Jaipur. The rain arrived soon after the toss in the morning, and almost wiped out the game, but eventually the officials were able to fit in the minimum 20-overs per side. In the wet conditions, however, MP, who were inserted, could not score at T20 pace. They finished at little over a run a ball, on 137 for 6. Medium pacer Amit Mishra, while one of UP’s more expensive bowlers, was also their most effective, taking 4 for 38. In the reply, several of UP’s top order got starts – four of the top six got into the 20s – but none could kick on to seal the game. As they fell to 118 for 8 in the 19th over, it was left to allrounder Piyush Chawla to get the big hit away; he managed to once, but could not do enough to get the team over the line. The match between Railways and Vidarbha in Jaipur was abandoned without a ball being bowled owing to wet weather.

South Zone

Tamil Nadu thumped Andhra by eight wickets, with almost 20 overs to spare, to register their second win in as many games in the tournament. Tamil Nadu chose to bowl and pace bowler Yo Mahesh justified that decision, running through Andhra’s top and middle order. Mahesh took 5 for 31 as only one of Andhra’s top eight got into double digits. It took a dogged 37 from No. 9 T Atchuta Rao to get them past the 100 mark; they were bowled out for 126 in the 42nd over. Tamil Nadu’s openers, M Vijay and U Sushil, then all but sealed the game, putting on 84 in 20 overs. Vijay was out soon after completing a half-century, to legspinner Swaroop Kumar – who also took out B Aparajith first ball – before captain S Badrinath saw the game through with Sushil. An unbeaten half-century from Ashish Reddy helped Hyderabad record the second tie of the day, against Karnataka in Bangalore. The scores finished level after a seesawing Hyderabad innings: after looking strong at 142 for 2 in 31 overs in pursuit of 248, they fell prey to Karnataka’s seamers and slid to 165 for 6 before Reddy’s counterattacking 51 off 40 got them two points from the match. Abhimanyu Mithun triggered the mini-collapse, getting Ravi Teja caught behind. Vinay Kumar then cashed in, claiming three quickly on his way to a five-for. Earlier, Karnataka had got to 248 for 8 on the back of a team showing – all but one player got into double digits, and three got into the 40s though there was no half-century.Kerela captain Sachin Baby struck a brisk 89 to shepherd a modest chase as his side beat Goa by wickets. Goa suffered an early blow when Swapnil Asnodkar had to retire hurt on 33. Regular wickets tumbled starting with Sandeep Warrier nipping out two in successive overs. Harshad Gadekar and No.9 Robin D’Souza shared a 52-run stand for the seventh wicket to push the score past 200 but the eventual target was not threatening. Prasanth Parameswaran mopped up the tail to end up with 4 for 36 off his nine overs. The chase was primarily built around Baby as he guided two half-century stands for the fourth and fifth wickets and though he could not finish the game off, by the time he got out there were only 38 runs with over 10 overs left.
