England will stick to four-man attack

On what should have been the fifth day of the Perth Test the city was by steady rain, but England had already been heavily beaten

Andrew Miller in Perth20-Dec-2010

At Adelaide a fortnight ago, Australia were left to rue their lack of application on the final day of the third Test, when one of the heaviest deluges ever to hit South Australia swept across the city some three hours after the final wicket had fallen. England’s cricketers might have felt similar pangs of regret when they opened their curtains in Perth on Monday morning, where a steady drizzle greeted the dawning of the scheduled fifth day of the Test. All such musings were academic, however. England didn’t come close to taking this match the distance. They were routed by 267 runs with more than five-and-a-half sessions to spare, thanks to a brilliant spell of swing bowling from Mitchell Johnson, a devastatingly commanding 116 from Mike Hussey, and a series of English performances that appeared laced with fatigue after an intense campaign that is set to reach a crescendo in front of a near-capacity 90,000 MCG crowd on Boxing Day.It’s a scenario that Andy Flower, England’s coach, set out to treat with his customary phlegmatic attitude, even though he himself admitted his surprise at the size and the nature of England’s trouncing at the WACA. But the issue of battle-weariness is clearly one that needs to be carefully handled in the coming days, as England’s cricketers try to rouse themselves for the biggest challenge of their careers to date, at precisely the moment that – subconsciously at least – one or two might have envisaged an easing-off of the pressure with the Ashes already in the bag.”That’s just reality. We lost in three-and-a-half days; we can’t get away from it,” said Flower. “So we move on to use our time as wisely as possible. Today is an off-day for the players – they’ve been working hard throughout this tour – and we will use it as a rest day. It is a tough schedule, but international schedules around the world are tough these days. Everyone will get weary at some stage, but you’ve just got to deal with it.”With a travel day in prospect on Tuesday, and two further days of relative down-time anticipated in Melbourne before training resumes in earnest on Christmas Eve, England’s management clearly feel that a chance for some rest and reflection is the best way to rally the team ahead of the final two Tests. James Anderson has reported stiffness in his side since his exertions at Perth, which followed his 48 hours in the air for the birth of his daughter, while the series leading wicket-taker, Steven Finn, looked especially fatigued while going at five an over in the match.”A five-Test series is hard on everyone, both physically and emotionally, and for the fast bowlers more so,” said Flower. “I think Steven Finn has done really well. For a 21-year-old to come into an Ashes series in Australia, he’s handled himself superbly, and he’s taken a lot of wickets in three Test matches. I think we expect a lot of these young men, to come in and shoulder quite a lot of responsibility – and I think he’s done that really well.”Nevertheless, with Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad both demonstrating good rhythm in their two warm-up appearances at Hobart and Melbourne, the prospect of fresh legs in the seam attack is a distinct possibility for the fourth Test. Flower refused to get drawn on the specifics of selection so far out from the start of the match, but ruled out any prospect of Bresnan being chosen as a fifth bowler in place of the out-of-form Paul Collingwood, who has made 99 runs in his last nine Test innings.”We’ve got a few days now to reassess before Melbourne, and we’ll pick the 11 we think have the best chance of winning,” he said. “The workload on the bowlers is heavy, and in the absence of a quality allrounder, we are sticking with a four-bowler attack. We’ve shown over the last 18 months it’s served us well, so that’s what we’ll be doing. But of course, tactically, we will adjust for Melbourne. It’s a different set of circumstances.”An added burden for England’s pacemen at the WACA was the lack of control that Graeme Swann was able to exert. On a wicket that did not suit his style whatsoever, he bowled just nine overs for 51 in England’s second innings, as Hussey set out to dominate him from the word go. Flower, however, disagreed with the notion that Swann had been intimidated by a player who has now amassed 517 runs in five innings this series, and backed him to bounce back on friendlier surfaces at Melbourne and Sydney.”Without a doubt he can come back,” said Flower. “We’d have expected a guy of his quality to affect the momentum a little more, but once we got on that pitch we all noticed it was tricky facing the quicks. The bounce was aiding them, and there wasn’t much turn there for him, so it was a difficult task. That certainly affected the whole momentum of the game, but I don’t blame him for that at all, it was a tough ask. Melbourne is a different set of conditions, we don’t know exactly what they will be yet, we’ll find out when we arrive there in the next couple of days.””He got [Hussey] in the first innings of this Test, so I’d be surprised if Swann got intimidated by him,” added Flower. “He played him well, and he’s a good player of spin, but I wouldn’t agree with that statement. He’s used all of his experience in this Test series so far, and has played superbly – and we give him a lot of credit for that, of course. We have to look at the way we’re going to attack him, and will do that prior to this Test match.”We all know how quickly things can turn around,” added Flower. “We’ve just seen a very good example of it in a team sense between Adelaide and here. The same thing can happen with individuals. He’ll be trying his darnedest to keep that form going; we want to try to burst it.”Flower did concede that the prospect of a promotion in the batting order for Ian Bell, England’s classiest strokemaker in the series to date, is very much on the cards for Melbourne “We’re always looking at ways to improve our side,” he said. “Ian Bell looks in very good form, very confident – and has played beautifully throughout this tour. Jiggling with batting orders and personnel is always an option. You also have to be careful about altering a side that has been very successful over the last 18 months, but those options are always open.”The simple truth is that England will need to raise their game ten-fold if they are to re-establish their mastery on a series that all going totally to plan at the end of the Adelaide Test. “This was always going to be a fight, and it would have been naive to think otherwise,” said Flower. “Coming to Australia to win is a huge challenge – we knew that at the start. We played some very good cricket in the first two Tests, but didn’t here – and were outplayed. We’re back to evens.”Amid all the excitement about Australia’s revival came the suggestion that they had ramped up their aggression levels, both physically and verbally since the start of the series, particularly in the case of the previously off-colour Johnson. Flower, however, dismissed that suggestion. “I would expect any side to be aggressive in any Test match,” he said. “The bottom line is delivering skills, and we didn’t do that well enough in this Test. The way we will prepare for Melbourne is we expect the ball to swing – and we also expect us to play it better.”

Leeds: Fabrizio Romano drops under-the-radar Raphinha update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped a transfer update on Leeds United winger Raphinha, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

The Lowdown: Deco talks

Reports earlier this month suggested that Deco, Raphinha’s agent, jetted out to Barcelona looking to progress talks over a summer transfer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Both Deco and the Catalan giants were looking to finalise personal terms in what could be a five-year deal at the Nou Camp.

Raphinha has remained fully focused at Elland Road, with Jesse Marsch’s side five points clear of safety after picking up 11 points from a possible 15.

The Latest: Romano’s reply

Romano, who has 7.6m Twitter followers, took to the platform on Wednesday morning to reply to rumours regarding Barcelona and Raphinha.

He clarified the situation when responding to a fan, saying Barcelona and Leeds haven’t spoken over a move as of yet, with the only talks involving Raphinha’s representatives themselves.

The transfer expert’s reply went under the radar due its place mid-way through a conversation between other users, receiving just over 1,100 likes – about 0.014 per cent of his following.

“Still no talks Barça/Leeds – it’s only on player side. Too early to say he’s close to join FCB – even because he’s focused on Leeds now, important games are coming.”

The Verdict: Exit inevitable?

Even though Leeds are yet to discuss a move with Barcelona in regards to Raphinha, it does appear that a summer exit from Elland Road is inevitable.

The Whites will want to ensure they get the best possible deal, should they decide to sell, making Premier League safety even more important.

There is apparently a €25m relegation release clause in the 25-year-old’s deal but no release clause if Leeds remain in the top flight, so the Whites could bring in a huge fee if they stay up.

In other news: Radz and 49ers will now reward Marsch if he keeps Leeds up by moving for 29-goal forward.

Gooch has faith in England's competitive spirit

England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, believes that the leadership partnership of Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower has instilled in the squad a competitive edge that has been lacking on previous tours of Australia

England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, believes that the leadership partnership of Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower has instilled in the squad a competitive edge that has been lacking on previous tours of Australia, but says that their hopes of mounting a successful defence of the Ashes for the first time in 24 years will hinge on the intensity of their preparation in the three warm-up games leading into the first Test at Brisbane on November 25.”The experience of taking on Australia is always fantastic feeling for an England player,” he told ESPNcricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “They have been the No. 1 side for most of the past decade, and they have a competitive spirit that some would say is unmatched by many other sides, although I do believe that England at the moment are approaching that sort of standard. The way they have been playing of late, they go with a lot of confidence, knowing the challenge ahead but relishing at the same time.”Gooch, 57, is embarking on his sixth tour of Australia, four of which came as a player between 1978-79 and 1994-95, and one as manager in 1998-99. In 1990-91, he led from the front as captain with 426 runs in four Tests including a century at Adelaide, but found that, despite forging a close bond with the coach of the time, Micky Stewart, he was unable to transfer his own formidable work ethic to the squad at large.Twenty years on from that trip, however, Gooch is confident that every man in the current England squad understands the levels of professionalism expected of them on such an arduous tour, and credits Strauss and Flower for cultivating the necessary attitude. “The two individuals have very astute cricket brains,” he said. “They are disciples of the game, they both love the game, and they are both well respected, and that’s a vital starting point for any relationship and any leadership scenario.”Both men are very fair with the players, very balanced, and they can both communicate with the players,” he added. “They know how to get the best out of each individual, and Flower in particular is very meticulous, and doesn’t leave anything to chance. Everyone in that team knows that England are only going to Australia for one reason. They are not going for the weather, they are not going for the hospitality, they are going to win the Ashes, and that will be the focus.”After an arduous season that was made all the more mentally draining by the match-fixing allegations that overshadowed the ODI series against Pakistan, the majority of England’s cricketers are currently enjoying a well-deserved break. However, with the squad set to depart for Perth on October 29, the down-time is fast coming to an end.”The players are in as good condition as they can be,” said Gooch. “The guys who play all forms only finished on September 22, so they need a few weeks off, because you can’t work every minute of the day. But in my experience of touring Australia as a player, coach and manager, you’ve got to get up to speed quick, and in past tours, we’ve started to play cricket after the first Test, if you see what I mean. You’ve got to hit it at the first Test because that sets the tone.”In terms of his day-to-day role as England’s batting coach, Gooch believes that the mental side of the job will be every bit as important as the technical. “For guys at this level, you’re not trying to reinvent their game, you just want to give them tips and good advice, and shape them in a slight direction,” he said. “I think it’s very important to keep talking to players about their game whether their confidence is low or whether they are playing really well, so that you can reinforce what it is they are doing well.”That said, there are few men in the English game who relish the hands-on nature of coaching quite like Gooch, who spent the latter stages of the 2009 season helping his Essex protégé, Alastair Cook, remodel his technique, and also spent a week at Lord’s this summer working one-on-one with Kevin Pietersen. In recent months, he has added a new weapon to his coaching armoury, a plastic throwing arm called the Sidearm, which has been developed by a local entrepreneur in Essex, and with which Gooch spent many a happy hour beasting his charges in the nets.”It’s a bit like a dog-ball thrower,” he explained. “It’s just like giving normal throwdowns, except it imparts more pace and is more realistic for a net session. People say it saves your arm, and that is one aspect, but because the ball comes out quicker, and swings as well, it gives the net session more intensity. In the past, England have practised using Merlin [the spin bowling machine] and all that, but those are not exactly easy to carry around.”Nothing, however, will be more important to England’s preparations than the three warm-up games at Perth, Adelaide and Hobart, the first of which gets underway at the WACA on November 5. “Middle practice is invaluable,” said Gooch. “The England team’s work ethic and attitude to preparation has been first-class since I’ve been involved, but you only get confidence from scoring runs and taking wickets, and as a batsman, you need to get your feet moving, and see the ball going between fielders.”You need to play solid defensive shots, and leave the ball well,” he added. “Your judgment needs to be good, and you need to hone that in the middle, because that’s where your confidence comes from. As a batsman you don’t lose your ability, what you lose sometimes is your confidence in that ability, and confidence plays a big part in life, not just cricket. Do you feel good about yourself, and are you in the right frame of mind?”Pietersen is one notable batsman whose confidence has been down in recent months, and his Ashes preparations began this week with the first of two first-class fixtures for the Durban-based Dolphins in South Africa. In general terms, however, Gooch is convinced that the batsmen who has been chosen for the Ashes are ready for the challenge, despite a Test series against Pakistan in which ball dominated bat to an often dramatic degree.”I have a great belief in the collective skills of this batting unit,” he said. “The English conditions this summer were conducive to fast bowling in particular, and there were some low-scoring games, which often produce exciting Test matches. It’s fair to say they’ll need to be at their best to beat Australia in their own conditions, but those conditions will be slightly different. There will be more bounce and carry, but the wickets themselves will be flatter, and you’ve got to get runs on the board to be competing in each Test.”

Leeds: Kieran Maguire impressed by financial accounts

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has hailed Leeds United after they shared their 2020/21 accounts, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Profit

The Whites, owned by Andrea Radrizzani and the San Francisco 49ers, announced a profit of £26m for the 2020/21 campaign in the week, in what was their first season back in the Premier League after 16 years.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Leeds, who made a loss of £62m in their Championship winning season, posted a turnover of £171m this time around, which was helped by new partnerships with Adidas and shirt sponsor SBOTOP.

The club also brought in just over £20m in merchandise sales, with £15m coming in from other commercial sources. [FI]

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI regarding Leeds’ annual numbers.

He labelled them as ‘very encouraging’ and pinpointed the club’s merchandise sales, describing them as ‘outstanding’.

“These are very encouraging figures.

“They had no matchday income or catering income, which together I would expect to be the thick end of £25m.

“When they get matchday income back, it gives them the opportunity to grow. Commercial revenue will only grow as well.

“For me, the outstanding figure was merchandise. To sell £20m worth of merchandise during Covid is indicative of the strength of the fanbase.”

The Verdict: Premier League status crucial

The two contrasting accounts just go to show how crucial Premier League football is to the club, with the Whites recording just their second profit in ten years.

And Leeds took a big step towards ensuring a third season in the division by beating Watford on Saturday.

Another year in the Premier League, along with a possible big-money move to Barcelona for Raphinha, could allow the Whites to back Jesse Marsch in his first transfer window at Elland Road, but there is still work to be done on the pitch before the club can think about any eye-catching signings.

Martin-Jenkins shines before retirement

ScorecardAn unbeaten 73 in his last County Championship game from allrounder Robin Martin-Jenkins put Sussex in a decent position halfway through their Division Two game with Gloucestershire at Arundel. Martin-Jenkins, 34, who retires later this month, was the only Sussex batsman to go on after four of his top-five colleagues fell for between 37 and 49. The home side still closed on 314 for 6, a lead of seven.Gloucestershire stayed in contention thanks to some probing left-arm spin from Vikram Banerjee on a pitch offering increasing turn. Banerjee took four wickets while seamer Gemaal Hussain continued his excellent form with two more wickets to take him to 41 for the season.Hussain’s new-ball away swing accounted for opener Michael Thornely, who pushed to second slip, and Banerjee struck in only his second over when Chris Nash, one short of his half-century, was surprised by extra bounce and edged to slip. When Ed Joyce, who had looked assured in making 43, popped up a catch to short leg to give Banerjee his second wicket Gloucestershire had a measure of control, but the game swung back Sussex’s way either side of tea with three half-century stands.Murray Goodwin and Matt Prior put on 55 until Goodwin, on 44, was leg before to a full-length delivery from Hussain. Prior played well within himself for his 37 but had just started to accelerate when he mistimed a drive at Banerjee and gave an easy catch to cover.Sussex were still 105 behind at that stage but Martin-Jenkins came in to play with the freedom of someone under absolutely no pressure. He soon overtook his partner Joe Gatting with a succession of flowing front-foot strokes as 55 runs were added for the sixth wicket in 14 overs.Gatting has endured a wretched summer, with just 100 Championship runs in five games, but seemed to have found some form as he moved to a season’s best 25 before he was too late on a defensive push to become Banerjee’s second leg-before victim. Martin-Jenkins pressed on though and negotiated the second new ball in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 57 with Yasir Arafat. He has struck 12 fours in 108 balls so far.Earlier, Gloucestershire’s last-wicket pair added a further 21 runs to their overnight 286 for 9 to secure a third batting bonus point before last man Steve Kirby feathered a catch off Arafat, who finished with a season’s best 3 for 55.

The ICC stands by its original decision to promote Nepal ahead of Singapore, despite the crowd trouble that helped the home team qualify•International Cricket Council

The ICC has published its report on the investigations into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket Division League Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur. It has found no evidence to support Singapore Cricket Association’s (SCA’s) claim that Nepal had earned a back-door entry into Division Four following a crowd disturbance, due to the technical committee’s revised target that helped them edge ahead of Singapore on net run-rate.The match was disrupted in the closing stages by the unruly home crowd, with USA set for a facile win that would have brought Nepal below Singapore in the league standings. As it transpired, the 45-minute delay caused by the crowd disturbance meant the target was revised significantly enough to lift Nepal’s net run-rate above Singapore’s by a slender margin, giving the home side a fortuitous entry into Division Four. The SCA demanded that ICC looked into the issue, specifically the decision of the technical committee that revised USA’s target from 163 off 50 overs, to 157 off 46.The inquiry, conducted by top ICC officials Dave Richardson, David Becker and Ravi Sawani, ruled against SCA’s claims today. However, it made recommendations that the proposed mandatory safety standards being introduced by the ICC security task force considers including sanctions against the home board when the home crowd interrupts a match, particularly when it benefits the home team. The investigation covered all aspects of the controversy including the net run-rate calculations, the reactions of the match officials and the nature of the security-related issues which arose during the match.Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, thanked the inquiry panel for their investigations and expressed his sympathy for Singapore, but said that promoting them retrospectively would set a bad precedent. “I am grateful to the inquiry panel for the thorough investigation conducted and it is reassuring to note that the correct processes and playing rules were applied by the event technical committee and match officials.”It is a most unfortunate outcome for Singapore and there was a suggestion that they should be promoted alongside USA and Nepal. While everyone agrees that this was a regrettable incident and one which we do not want to see repeated, there is no justifiable basis to promote Singapore and such temptation would create a dangerous precedent to the integrity of competition and the playing regulations,” Lorgat said. The Cricket Association of Nepal has already accepted a directive to not host further international cricket at the venue until remedial measures were carried out, including the reconstruction of the boundary wall that was damaged by stone-throwers looking for projectiles to hurl into the ground.
