Liverpool: Phillips wanted by Bournemouth

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips is attracting Deadline Day interest from Bournemouth, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

The lowdown

With the January transfer window nearing its end, the Reds have yet to offload any senior players.

Phillips was heavily involved in 2020/21 amid an injury crisis, but he has only made three appearances for the first team this season, with his only start coming on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool had already qualified for the round of 16 as group winners before they faced AC Milan at San Siro in early December, enabling Jurgen Klopp to make changes.

The latest

Joyce tweeted shortly before midday on Monday that Bournemouth want to take the 24-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign, with the Cherries also taking an interest in another Liverpool defender.

He outlined: “Bournemouth are looking to sign Nat Phillips, the Liverpool centre-back, on loan for the rest of the season. Phillips will have regular football and Liverpool will receive a loan fee. Bournemouth are also interested in right-back Neco Williams.”

The verdict

It was reported earlier in the month that Liverpool were willing to let Phillips leave permanently if their £15m demands were met, but either the Englishman’s suitors don’t think he’s worth that much, or maybe they simply can’t afford to shell out that kind of sum. Indeed, Watford’s £7m offer may be the best that the Reds have received up to this point.

Phillips showed just how good he is with what called Klopp an ‘outstanding’ performance at the San Siro, where he locked horns with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He would be quite a coup for Championship side Bournemouth, where he will hopefully get the same volume of game-time that he enjoyed at Anfield in the early months of 2021.

Celtic: Insider makes Ahmed Kendouci claim

Transfer insider Dean Jones believes that Celtic target Ahmed Kendouci is ‘pushing’ for a late move to Parkhead, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Kendouci links

The Hoops have already brought in five players this month and there could be more to come, with journalist Pete O’Rourke believing that the Hoops could be after another central midfielder before Monday’s deadline.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Kendouci, who was linked with a move to Celtic earlier this month, is primarily a central midfielder who can also play an attacking role or on the left. The 22-year-old has contributed to 31 goals in 81 appearances for ES Setif, and it seems as if he is keen on a move to Scotland.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Jones, who recently labelled Kendouci as a player with ‘huge potential’, was talking to GiveMeSport regarding the Algerian.

He believes the player is ‘pushing’ for a late transfer and urged the Hoops to get a deal over the line, saying:

“I think they should try stepping up their interest because they don’t want this window to end on a bad vibe.

“I believe he’s pushing and is quite keen on the transfer. If they can push forward with that, then I think that it would really give them the exact feeling they want within the camp going into the final stages of the season.”

The Verdict: Left-back instead?

Celtic are fairly well-stocked in the middle of the park following the arrivals of Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Matt O’Riley, so perhaps another midfield addition isn’t exactly pivotal at this moment in time.

However, should the Hoops send Adam Montgomery out on loan and find a new home for Boli Bolingoli, then perhaps signing a new left-back could be a smart idea.

Greg Taylor could end up being Postecoglou’s only recognised left-back for the second half of the season, so a late defensive acquisition could come in handy.

Plays of the day from the first day of the second Test between India and South Africa in Kolkata

N Hunter14-Feb-2010

Harbhajan Singh was on a hat-trick after dismissing Ashwell Prince and JP Duminy•Getty Images

Petersen pierces the field
Silly point, short cover, and extra cover were in place as Amit Mishra tossed up a legbreak on middle and off stump. Alviro Petersen, a debutant, took on the challenge, strode forward and drove handsomely to the boundary. It was easily the shot of the in morning.Mishra kicks dust
The last ball of the same over was a straighter one that pitched on middle stump, held its line and, as Hawk-Eye indicated, probably would have hit between middle and leg. But when the umpire turned down Mishra’s vociferous appeal, he couldn’t believe it and raised his arms and shrieked. He had bowled 53 overs without a wicket in Nagpur and continued to toil.Laxman drops a sitter
They don’t come much easier. Hashim Amla tried to cut a delivery outside off from Harbhajan Singh but the outside edge travelled straight to VVS Laxman at first slip. He juggled thrice but couldn’t hold on. He made amends, though, by running from first slip towards short third man to catch Jacques Kallis, also off Harbhajan.Spell of the day
4-1-12-0. It was delivered by Ishant Sharma, whose first spell in the afternoon was about half hour before tea. Until then, play had been dominated by Petersen and Amla. Maintaining speeds between 129 and 140 kph, Ishant pitched accurately – short of a length on the off-stump line. Even Amla, who had survived 100 overs in the series till then, was hopping and skipping as he tried to fend off Ishant’s snorters, one of which hit him on the hips. It was a crucial spell because the runs dried up for the first time in the day.Blunder of the day
After Petersen’s departure on the brink of tea, South Africa needed Amla to extend his vigil. He was more aggressive today compared to Nagpur and had stepped out dangerously against Harbhajan but got away. There were a few misses as he tried to upper-cut Ishant during his hot spell as well. But off the fourth ball after tea, an away-going short delivery from Zaheer, Amla went for an unnecessary pull, and the edge travelled into MS Dhoni’s gloves.Harbhajan’s tent
As soon as Harbhajan trapped Ashwell Prince and JP Duminy off consecutive deliveries, Dhoni set a tent-like field to help his spinner take a hat-trick. Men had already been positioned at first slip, silly point and short leg, and joining them now were a leg slip and an additional slip. Memories of 2001 returned as Harbhajan charged in to claim a dramatic hat-trick. Even as Dale Steyn survived the ball, the ring of close fielders jumped up and appealed in unison out of sheer excitement., Harris
India did not forget Paul Harris’ choking lines and lengths in the first Test as well as his quips to mentally disintegrate them. So Zaheer, having just run out AB de Villiers, walked alongside Harris, the new man, as he stepped into the raucous Eden Gardens. Next, Ishant did not waste time in bowling in the channel and repeatedly breathed under Harris’ nose. Smiles and words were exchanged. Harris tried to stay calm, but the pressure was relentless, and he eventually edged a delivery that shaped away a bit. Ishant bowed dramatically with folded hands (traditional Indian greeting ‘namaste’) to see the South African out.

Aston Villa must avoid Cantwell transfer

Following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Dean Smith’s replacement at Aston Villa, it was revealed that the owners at Villa Park would give financial backing to the 41-year-old during the January transfer window.

The first example of this could be seen in their recent loan deal for Barcelona and former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho.

Looking ahead to the rest of the window, the Midlands club have plenty of time left to complete any deals that they think will improve Gerrard’s squad and enable them to end their season on a high.

However, one potential target who the Villans should definitely avoid this month is Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell.

With Villa having been linked with a potential £40m move for the midfielder last summer, The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently claimed that the Canaries would be willing to sell the 23-year-old for a reduced fee of £15m or more.

Despite this substantial drop in price, the Midlanders should still avoid making a move to sign him this month.

From a Villa point of view, even before the arrival of Coutinho, they have a significant number of midfield and attacking players in their squad, including youngsters Jacob Ramsey, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cameron Archer, who could end up being overlooked if Cantwell were to join.

In terms of what the 23-year-old – who is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt – could offer to Villa, he has not scored a goal or provided an assist in eight Premier League appearances so far this season. That suggests that the Englishman may not have the quality to get into the Villa team in the first place.

In addition to Cantwell’s lack of goal contributions in the league this season, his performances haven’t been much to shout about either. WhoScored give him an overall rating of 6.23/10, which would rank him among Villa’s lowest-rated players this season.

Having been accused of “getting above his station” by pundit Chris Sutton after walking down the tunnel at Carrow Road when he was substituted in Norwich’s game against Villa last month, the 23-year-old may not necessarily have the attitude that Gerrard would want in his squad either.

Overall, Villa must avoid a potential transfer howler and forget about securing a deal for Cantwell this month despite the apparent decrease in Norwich’s asking price.

Auckland take tense first win

A round-up of the fifth day’s games of the HRV Cup, New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition

Cricinfo staff08-Jan-2010Auckland kept their cool to secure their first Twenty20 victory of the season, a two-run win over Wellington at the Basin Reserve. Chasing 170, Wellington slid to 7 for 3 after the second over, but James Franklin’s 48-ball 72, studded with five sixes, revived them. With Chris Nevin smashing a 24-ball 41, Wellington were actually in control going into the final three overs, needing 17 runs with both Nevin and Franklin at the crease. However, Daryl Tuffey removed Nevin and Michael Bates struck twice in two deliveries of the penultimate over to dent Wellington. The home side could have still won, needing six off the final five balls, but the last wicket pair couldn’t pull it off. Earlier, after being sent in, Auckland relied on half-centuries from opener Lou Vincent and Anaru Kitchen to post a tall total. It was a far easier outing for table-topping Central Districts, who coasted to a 19-run victory over Northern Districts at Pukekura Park. Ross Taylor blasted four fours and four sixes in his 53 to power CD to 184, with Daniel Vettori being carted for 53 runs in his four overs. Even though big-hitting allrounders Jacob Oram and Graham Napier barely contributed with the bat, they made amends while bowling; Napier got the big wicket of Vettori early and followed it up by dismissing Daniel Flynn, while Oram prised out Brian Watling to leave ND at 23 for 3. James Marshall’s half-century started a recovery but George Worker got two-in-two in his only over, the 12th, to dash ND’s hopes. It was the team batting first that won in Christchurch as well, where defending champions Otago crushed Canterbury by 43 runs. After choosing to bat, Otago’s top four each made at least 20, with Neil Broom’s 37-ball 58 being the top score. There was drama in the final over of Otago’s batting, when Ryan Burson took three wickets in four balls and gave away only two runs to leave Canterbury needing 160 to win. Canterbury’s chances were nearly extinguished by the end of the seventh over following a middle-order collapse in which three wickets went down in seven deliveries. From 45 for 5, it was mostly a question of reducing the margin of defeat.

Hatfield plays down Dele joining Wolves

Wolves shouldn’t consider making a move for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli in the January transfer window, according to journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Alli linked with Spurs exit

The 25-year-old’s stock has fallen rapidly in recent years, going from one of England’s World Cup stars in 2018 to an outcast at Spurs.

Alli could leave the north London club in January in order to earn more playing time, considering that he has only started six Premier League games this season, and none since the end of September.

While Wolves haven’t officially been linked with a move for the midfielder, Paul Merson recently said on Sky Sports (via Molineux News) that the Old Gold should consider him as a prospective signing.

The Latest: Hatfield plays down interest

Alas, Hatfield has been quick to play down this potential transfer. Speaking to Give Me Sport, the journalist had no doubt that Alli would jump at the chance to join Wanderers but doubted that it would work out well for the Black Country outfit

He said: “It wouldn’t work if you’re Wolves. I could understand it from the player’s perspective because he’d want to go to a club where they’re not worried about relegation.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Not worth the risk

It is sad to see what has happened to Alli’s career, given the potential he had as a teenager, but the fire in him appears to have gone out, despite being hailed as a ‘machine’ by Rio Ferdinand.

While the 25-year-old’s natural talent is undeniable – he once scored 18 goals in a Premier League season in north London – he simply isn’t worth the risk for Wolves, with far too many ineffective performances thrown in for Tottenham under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

Alli has only scored three league goals since the beginning of last season, which sums up his struggles considering that he is an attack-minded player, and he hasn’t completed 90 minutes in a league outing since September. When you also factor in criticism of his application at times, it’s easy to see why Hatfield has his reservations about the Spurs playmaker succeeding at Molineux.

Liverpool predicted starting XI vs Brighton

After confidently beating Manchester United 5-0 in their previous Premier League match followed by progressing through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Preston North End, Liverpool are back in action on Saturday with a league showdown against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the match against Graham Potter’s side, who are currently fifth in the table with 15 points from their opening nine league games of the season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed in his latest press conference that midfield duo Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara will miss the match. However, Naby Keita will be available to play despite being on the receiving end of a robust red-card tackle from Paul Pogba six days ago.

Taking this into account, here’s how we feel Liverpool will line up against Brighton, with just one member of the starting XI from Deepdale keeping his place in the side.

Despite making three saves and keeping a clean sheet in midweek against Preston, we think Klopp will take Adrian out of the team and put Alisson Becker back in after the Brazilian shut out Cristiano Ronaldo and co at Old Trafford.

In defence, we expect Klopp to reinstate the back four which started against United, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson occupying the full-back positions and Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the middle after all four were rested in midweek.

For the midfield, with Jordan Henderson impressing against the Red Devils with an overall match rating of 8/10 according to SofaScore and Fabinho  unable to play, it’s hard to see the captain not being picked to start against Brighton.

Next to the 31-year-old, now that it has been confirmed that Keita is fit enough to play after being stretchered off as a result of a hefty challenge from Pogba last weekend, we feel that the Guinean should slot back into the side following his recent run of good form.

For the final midfield berth, with James Milner picking up a hamstring injury against the Red Devils, we think Klopp will turn to Curtis Jones to play alongside Henderson and Keita after the 20-year-old completed 89 minutes in midweek.

In the front three, it’s almost a given that Mohamed Salah will start to see if he can add any more goals to the already impressive tally he’s built up so far this season. We feel that Klopp will bring Sadio Mane back into the team on the left wing, with Diogo Jota down the middle ahead of Roberto Firmino.

Forasteiro, atacante vira arma do São Paulo contra 'Hernanesdependência'
