Liverpool predicted starting XI vs Brighton

After confidently beating Manchester United 5-0 in their previous Premier League match followed by progressing through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Preston North End, Liverpool are back in action on Saturday with a league showdown against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the match against Graham Potter’s side, who are currently fifth in the table with 15 points from their opening nine league games of the season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed in his latest press conference that midfield duo Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara will miss the match. However, Naby Keita will be available to play despite being on the receiving end of a robust red-card tackle from Paul Pogba six days ago.

Taking this into account, here’s how we feel Liverpool will line up against Brighton, with just one member of the starting XI from Deepdale keeping his place in the side.

Despite making three saves and keeping a clean sheet in midweek against Preston, we think Klopp will take Adrian out of the team and put Alisson Becker back in after the Brazilian shut out Cristiano Ronaldo and co at Old Trafford.

In defence, we expect Klopp to reinstate the back four which started against United, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson occupying the full-back positions and Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the middle after all four were rested in midweek.

For the midfield, with Jordan Henderson impressing against the Red Devils with an overall match rating of 8/10 according to SofaScore and Fabinho  unable to play, it’s hard to see the captain not being picked to start against Brighton.

Next to the 31-year-old, now that it has been confirmed that Keita is fit enough to play after being stretchered off as a result of a hefty challenge from Pogba last weekend, we feel that the Guinean should slot back into the side following his recent run of good form.

For the final midfield berth, with James Milner picking up a hamstring injury against the Red Devils, we think Klopp will turn to Curtis Jones to play alongside Henderson and Keita after the 20-year-old completed 89 minutes in midweek.

In the front three, it’s almost a given that Mohamed Salah will start to see if he can add any more goals to the already impressive tally he’s built up so far this season. We feel that Klopp will bring Sadio Mane back into the team on the left wing, with Diogo Jota down the middle ahead of Roberto Firmino.

Forasteiro, atacante vira arma do São Paulo contra 'Hernanesdependência'

Durham spent the third day of this match batting themselves solidly, even stolidly, into a strong position, but some rather puzzling defensive tactics in the final session may prevent them from forcing victory on the final day

ScorecardIan Blackwell finished with career-best figures of 7 for 85•Getty ImagesDurham spent the third day of this match batting themselves solidly, even stolidly, into a strong position, but some rather puzzling defensive tactics in the final session may prevent them from forcing victory on the final day.  A turning pitch, provided it is not a minefield, is a rare pleasure in modern cricket and if there were more like these, spin bowling in England might flourish again.  Consequently both sides were playing in rather unfamiliar conditions, but Durham handled them more adeptly – particularly Michael Di Venuto, who restrained his natural attacking instincts to guide his team to a position of strength.Lancashire began the day still 18 runs behind Durham’s first-innings total and, the way the last pair of Tom Lungley and Gary Keedy had been batting, were still capable of taking the lead.  For a while they continued with a mixture of some good strokes and a bit of luck, but the latter expired when Keedy was caught at short leg off Ian Blackwell, five runs short.  This gave the Durham spinner figures of 7 for 85, the best of his career.Lancashire made what was to prove serious mistake when Di Venuto, with only a single to his credit, edged a ball from Kyle Hogg low into the slips, where Paul Horton could not hold a difficult chance.  As expected, the seamers did not last long, and Keedy came on the bowl the seventh over, being joined at the other end by Stephen Parry for the 12th.  Sometimes the ball turned and spun awkwardly, and the wicketkeeper Luke Sutton did not have an easy time during the day, conceding a number of byes and failing to take at least one difficult chance, though he did bag two.  The ball was turning square – or so the Lancashire fielders tried to convince the batsmen, as they crowded round their intended victims in a noisy mob.  Mark Stoneman, for once scoring faster than Di Venuto, made 33 out of 60 when he was given out to a fine diving catch behind square leg off Keedy, much to his displeasure. It seemed we were transported to the subcontinent, with two spinners bowling with a marauding pack of fielders making the usual ridiculous farmyard noises of simulated astonishment and disbelief every ball the batsman survived.  VVS Laxman, the chirpiest culprit, was put on to bowl his occasional off-breaks, which did quieten things down a little, until on the stroke of lunch Will Smith (1) turned one of his deliveries into the hands of the mobile wicketkeeper and Durham were 65 for 2.  Immediately on leaving the field, Laxman was awarded his county cap, though presumably this was for more than just his wicket and vocal contributions. After lunch Gordon Muchall decided attack was the best method of defence and took the assault to the spinners, using his feet well to drive and pulling anything short.  Di Venuto, in contrast, was uncharacteristically restrained, playing an innings far different from his usual upstanding, dominant style.  But the vital factor was that he stayed there to anchor the innings, even if it did take him 113 balls to reach his second 50 of the match.  He then pushed on a little more quickly, while Muchall seemed to run out of steam before being given out caught at square leg for 40, and walked off another dissatisfied customer. In these circumstances, and thanks largely once again to Di Venuto, Durham did remarkably well to reached 182 for 3 at tea. In the second over afterwards, however, he pushed a catch to silly point off Keedy and departed for an invaluable 84.Durham’s tactics now became rather puzzling, unless their attitude is now “We have the championship in the bag, so let’s make sure we finish the season undefeated.”  With rain forecast for at least some of the final day, one would have expected them to press on with some urgency towards a declaration; some locals considered they had enough runs to win the match anyway.  But instead two normally aggressive batsmen in Dale Benkenstein and Blackwell pushed and prodded their way along at just over two runs an over, until finally Blackwell (25 off 61 balls) pushed at a ball from Parry outside the off stump and was caught at the wicket.Benkenstein finished the day with a laborious unbeaten 48 off 143 bals.  No doubt Durham will consider themselves vindicated if they do win this match on the final day, but their surprisingly unenterprising approach during the final session has improved Lancashire’s chances of forcing a draw, result wicket and all.

Anderson has Ashes in his sights

James Anderson has admitted he would like the Ashes to start right away so that he could continue his match-winning Test form

Andrew McGlashan at Chester-le-Street19-May-2009James Anderson has admitted he would like the Ashes to start right away so that he could continue his match-winning Test form. Anderson collected the Man-of-the-Match award at Chester-le-Street after his nine-wicket haul helped England trounce West Indies by an innings-and-83 runs to regain the Wisden Trophy”It would be nice,” Anderson said when asked if he wished he could go straight into the Ashes series. “If I can keep working at my game and continue the form I’ve shown since the start of the summer hopefully I carry that on through the whole season.”Australia announce their touring party tonight, but for the moment, Anderson has not put much thought into who he might be coming up against in seven weeks’ time. “There’s not been much talk about it to be honest. We’ve just been concentrating on winning these Test matches first and then I’m sure we’ll start looking at who’s going to be playing in the Ashes later in the summer.”Anderson’s swing bowling was one of the stand-out features of England’s victory as he continued to demonstrate his development into a top-class pace bowler. He followed his first-innings haul of 5 for 87 with a final-day spell of 4 for 18 from 11 controlled overs as he made the ball move both ways at will.He produced two stunning deliveries to remove Jerome Taylor and Sulieman Benn as both batsmen had their off stumps uprooted by balls which moved late. It was overdue reward for Anderson who, like all the pace bowlers, endured a frustrating series in West Indies on flat pitches.Anderson is now firmly established as the senior pace bowler in the ranks, a responsibility he appears to thrive on as he continues to grow as an international cricketer. He has now risen to a career-best seventh in the ICC world rankings, and it is easy to forget he was actually left out of the side for the first Test at Sabina Park during the previous series.”My control is improving each game I play and if I can stay fit and continue working hard then the control should get better and better,” he said. “If anyone gets a run in the side it’s going to help their confidence, but the fact I’ve had the run would suggest I’ve also been doing something right so that’s also encouraging.”However, Anderson was also quick to praise his new-ball partner, Stuart Broad, who played a key role in Durham by removing Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan in the first innings. “If you look at it on paper I’ve got the most caps but Stuart has a 30-year-old’s head on his shoulders and he’s also someone that Straussy can also chuck the ball to if he needs someone,” he said. “I think we’ve got a good unit and hopefully we can continue to grow as a bowling unit.”One of highlights of the short series was Anderson’s ongoing duel with Fidel Edwards and they are unlikely to back down during the one-day series. Sulieman Benn wasn’t been shy of having a few words in the field, either, and Anderson gave him a little send-off on the final day when he suggested to Benn that he should keep quiet.Anderson could be in for an interesting time in the one-dayers because West Indies have called up Runako Morton, with whom Anderson had a shoulder-barging incident with at Trent Bridge in 2007. Anderson was fined 50% of his match fee for the confrontation, but given the form he is in now it would be unwise for West Indies to wind him up too much.

Azhar stands firm in KRL's slow progress

QEA Final

Scorecard
Khan Research Laboratories progressed cautiously on the first day of the final against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium, reaching 208 for 4, with opener Azhar Ali remaining unbeaten on 84. Put into bat, the KRL openers provided their team with a solid start, adding 63. However, the Sialkot bowlers struck at regular intervals to keep the opposition in check. Naved Arif, the left-arm medium fast bowler, accounted for opener Saeed Anwar jnr, who scored 30 off 47 balls. Wicketkeeper Zulfiqar Jan fell soon after – caught off Sarmad Anwar – as KRL lost two wickets for 16.Azhar and Ali Naqvi then added 43 but left-arm spinner Nayer Abbas – who finished the day with 2 for 50 – broke the stand, dismissing Naqvi for 17. After captain Mohammad Wasim fell with the score on 153, KRL were in a spot of bother but a laborious yet effective partnership of 55 between Azhar and Bazid Khan ensured there were no more setbacks. The current stand holds the key for KRL’s fortunes as they look to consolidate tomorrow.

I knew I could get eight – Krejza

At the end of his first innings it will be Jason Krejza’s magical return of eight wickets that will be remembered before the 215 runs from 43.5 overs

Watching Jason Krejza on the second day was even more addictive than during the first. Attacking spinners know they will get hit in the search for wickets and Krejza received a lot of success and punishment. At the end of his first innings it will be the magical return of eight wickets that will be remembered before the 215 runs from 43.5 overs. If Krejza never plays another Test – that’s a bit unlikely now – he will always be a record-breaker. When Simon Katich grabbed a sharp one-handed take to remove Ishant Sharma, Krejza became only the sixth bowler to earn eight wickets in an innings on debut.”It’s a bit of a blur still,” Krejza said after play. “I tried to keep doing what I was doing. I was happy to get the wickets. It’s still unbelievable to me.”Five of Krejza’s victims came in 19 runs as India were dismissed for 441 and during that period Krejza was battling to remain calm. “I was just trying to keep my emotions under control,” he said. “When the five-for came around, that’s the moment I’ll always remember, with a great catch from Michael Clarke. I thought I bowled better today than yesterday. I’ve started really well in Test cricket.”Sourav Ganguly was Krejza’s fifth victim, when he edged low to Clarke at first slip, and it was the point Krejza realised he could take eight. Only Albert Trott, Alf Valentine, Bob Massie, Narendra Hirwani and Lance Klusener had done that before.”When I was getting my five-for Binga [Brett Lee] said: ‘You can get eight-for here.’ I believed that and I kept going and got a bagful.”After bowling Dhoni and then removing Ganguly in the same over, he finished off the innings by capturing Zaheer Khan (1), Amit Mishra (0) and Ishant (0) in nine balls. Despite the five quick wickets on the second day, his favourite dismissal was his first one on Thursday, when Rahul Dravid popped a catch to Katich at short-leg.”That was the stand-out,” he said. “My strategy was if he came at it with low hands, and if I got some bounce, I could get him. It was a plan and it worked.”There were a clutch of other milestones for Krejza, including his maiden first-class five-wicket haul, and becoming the 14th Australian to achieve such a collection on debut. His figures were also the most expensive of any first-gamer in an innings, beating West Indian Omari Banks’ 3 for 204 in 2003 against Australia.Krejza, a surprise selection on the tour, was forced to wait until the final test to get an opportunity, but he has quickly moved up the slow-bowling pecking order. “It was an honour for me to be here in the first place,” he said. “For me to play was an even greater one. [Waiting] never worried me, I knew I was going to get a go at some stage.”While the swiftness of Krejza’s inspired collapse lifted the tourists, it also created some concern. If Krejza could do this, what would Harbhajan Singh do? By stumps Harbhajan had only one wicket, having bowled Ricky Ponting for 24, and the Australians were feeling much better.Katich’s 92 and Michael Hussey’s 45 had moved them to 189 for 2. “We’ve got ourselves into a really good position now where we have got two batsmen who are very good,” Krejza said. “It’s got us into a good position to win the game.”
